Information
Frú Elísabet is a short documentary about María Elísabet Jónsdóttir — known as Frú Elísabet frá Grenjaðarstað — a remarkable yet often misunderstood Icelandic pioneer. Born in 1869, she was a composer, community leader, and outspoken advocate for women’s rights. Although history has largely remembered her for her personal life, she founded three women’s organizations, fought for the right to vote, and became one of the first Icelandic women to publish a musical composition (Farfuglarnir, 1915).
The film brings her story to life through cinematic reenactments and newly recorded performances of her nine surviving songs, arranged and performed by musician Fanney Kristjáns Snjólaugardóttir. Miss Elísabet offers a rare glimpse into the legacy of a trailblazing woman in Iceland’s cultural and musical history.
